Is it Illegal to kill a Poppy Flower in California?

My friend had an idea for a senior prank, you plant all these poppies in the lawn spelling out 2008, and the school couldn't take them out because they are the state flower and it's illegal...

Just because it is the state flower doesn't make it a protected flower. Protection only applies to endangered species. Your prank won't work.


California Condors are endangered. Can you spell out 2008 using California Condors?

Reply:Might be, but I don't know California law. Bluebonnets are the state flower for Texas, but if they're growing on my lawn, I can still mow my lawn, even if it takes out the bluebonnets.
Reply:It's only illegal to destroy wild poppys. If you plant them from seed you can do whatever you what. With all the houses in Calif, are there even any wild ones left????
