Can you think of a nickname for my state?

We had to create an imaginary state for social studies class. Mine is named Calusa, and is located near Mississippi and Arkansas. The state bird is the black-capped chickadee and the flower is the yellow rose. Its climate is warm all year round. Can you think of a nickname? For example, New Jersey is the Garden State, New York is the Empire State, etc.

Can you think of a nickname for my state?
Call it the Trojan State-cuz parked between Arkansas and Mississippi---heaven forbid they reproduce!
Reply:The Simple Man's State!
Reply:Florida the sunshine state

California the golden state

If a sunflower loses its head due to traumatic injury, while in immature state, will it grow another?

A sunflower that is growing in a big pot in my back yard, reached about six feet in height and was developing a head. Today, I noticed that the top of the plant was broken... I am guessing wind damage.

If I leave it be and keep watering it, will a new flower/head develop?

If a sunflower loses its head due to traumatic injury, while in immature state, will it grow another?
Depends on the type of sunflower. Most old-fashioned sunflowers are single-headed and do not send out side shoots. However, newer hybrids have multiflowering side branches and will do as you wish. Water regularly, but don't allow roots to stand in a pool of water.
Reply:no. Sometimes when it begins to sprout it will develop two flowers, but not much more. If it grows tall and develops just one I think that's all you will get. Sometimes its wind damage, sometimes a bird's weight will break it, sometimes a squirrel's weight will break it.
Reply:well it's not always wind damage.

sunflower's tip can grow exceedingly large.

anyway, if your sunflower is bending over more than

say, 45 degrees, it may not have a chance to

develop another head. but if it's curved and not

curving downwards, then yes, your sunflower

will grow :)
Reply:Nope
Reply:Yes, If the injury is early on in the spring, it will grow a new sprout our "sucker" on the side of the root stock, and a new, but smaller head will form!
Reply:Sure, it'll be fine. It's just like pinching it back. Now it will bush out and get more heads.

Which state should I do?

I have a 2 page essay due tomorrow that I forgot about-1st period of the day. I have to choose a state (other than Hawaii-cuz I live here) and write about it's culture facts, state flower-stuff like that. I decided that I want to do one of the origanal 13 colonies (Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia) but which one should I do? are there any similarities between any of them. Like which ones were the last to end slavery. or which ones had running water first. . . anything!

ps

I'm not asking for material for my report-I'm just asking for an opinion on why I should choose a particular state.

Please only suggestions out of the ones listed!

Which state should I do?
I say Connecticut, because I'm from here. Oddly enough, my boyfriend is from Hawaii!
Reply:I'd do Massachusetts, there is so much history to report on, you'll have plenty to fill up those pages!!
Reply:i would say Delaware lots of interesting little facts and plus it was th first state to ratify the constitution

but its up to you : )
Reply:well i mite not be a lot of help but i would tell the teacher that i would rather fail than right two pages on a state that in the USA mainly because i hate righting a lot i hate righting so much that i mite of quit school if i did not have classes that i liked a lot now i rather right about how i would start putting thing on the moon so we could live there like plants for oxgen and solar panles for engery and try to ship water to drink and for the plants
Reply:Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, longest name - smallest State. Interesting as having been a land grant by the King for a place to practice "free" religion, they never felt they needed to fight the King. However has the State was the base of the Yankee traders in the worse sense, being slave shippers, rum runners and would sell your grandmother for a buck, the thought of a good fight during the Revolution had its merits.
Reply:i'd say NC its has tons of intersting facts. had to do a brochure in 10th grade
Reply:I would do NEW YORK

(actually I would do Texas b/c it has an extremely unique culture - like Hawaii - but pretend I didn't write this if you want to)

Information on state report?

So my little sisters are doing a State report.

Obviously they can go on the internet and find all the information they need.

One problem.....everytime they need something they turn to the internet (They are only 11)

My mom was saying that when she was in school and they were given state reports to do, they would send something to the state and the state would send back all the info.

including: state flower, seal, tree, bird etc.

my mom wants them to work a little harder, instead of running to the internet.

does anyone know if states still do this and if so, how would you go about it?

Thank you so much in advance!

Information on state report?
The mail can still be used./ Most states publish brochures to encourage tourism./ These brochures contain a lot of information.
Reply:i don't know about the states doing it but they have something besides internet access at the library---it's called books. lol. not being smart but i find myself using internet to find stuff when i have a book here with the info. interested to know outcome

In lower New York State, I saw an 30-40 tree with lilac colored flowers. Anyone know the name of it?

A mature 'Royalty ' is 15'-20' , so not likely. (Never say never though. Sometimes the plant hasn't read the book) Was probably was a Redbud ( Cercis canadensis) or possibly 'Leonard Messel ' Magnolia ( Magnolia x loebneri (i.e. M.stelllata x M. kobus) ) . Redbud has 1/2" flowers in clusters of 4-8 , held tight to the branches, all along the branches . The Magnolia has star-shaped , very fragrant , 4" flowers , purple-pink on the outside , white tinged with pink on the inside .Most likely candidate is Redbud . Jacaranda wouldn't have a prayer in NY. Pauwlonia would probably be killed to the ground most years, so 30-40' is unlikely .

In lower New York State, I saw an 30-40 tree with lilac colored flowers. Anyone know the name of it?
It may have been Paulownia aka Empress Tree

look here:

http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/Paulow...
Reply:you might need more details, such as leaf size and shape, and bark characteristics.
Reply:I think you are seeing the Royal Paulownia, or Empress or Princess tree. I have one in my yard that I planted almost 30 years ago, and once I did I began to notice them along the highways and train tracks here in NJ and nearby PA. The flowers are very distintive and come out before the leaves. Mine is blooming right now. They are almost weedlike along the roadsides in some areas, since each tree can produce an estimated 21 million seeds.
Reply:I bet it was a Crabapple. ''Royalty Crabapple'' to be exact...they have blooms that are usually a darker purple, but resemble those of lilacs.

It's a good looking Tree.
Reply:Maybe a Jacaranda I'm not sure of the spelling though.

What's the best perennial flowering plant that blooms all summer and deer resistant for the state of Illinois?

Marigolds are not perennials but all you have to do is pick the dead heads %26amp; store in a paper sack (the spent flowers becomes a seedpod) and replant next year. They are wonderful for blooming for so long, require little care %26amp; adapt to most all soils, as well as drought %26amp; rain. Very easy %26amp; neat as well as pretty. I am not wild about the smell but it does keep alot of animals away. Very long blooming period as well.

MARIGOLDS.
Reply:Hydrangea's - they are absolutely beautiful and they come back every year and last through the summer and fall. I have become quite addicted to the beauty of them and you can even change the colors of them by adding acidic plant food.

Does anyone know if it is legal to ship flower seeds from the US to Canada?

I sell seeds on Ebay but normally will only ship to the US states. However, someone from Canada bid on %26amp; won an auction for Hollyhock seeds, even though I state that in my listings.

Does anyone know if it is legal to ship flower seeds from the US to Canada?
First off, check to see if the high bidders shipping address is the same. Many times they will buy and then the "ship to" address is different. They may be buying them for a relative in Tucumcari New Mexico and they themselves live in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. See what I mean? Look at their shipping confirmation to see if this is so. If not, I would suggest you contact the Canadian Dept Of Agriculture at the below link and find out if it is ok to ship hollyhock seeds into their country. Most of the time they are only worried about food crops, but you never know, hollyhock could be classified as a noxious weed in Canada for all we know. If you are not allowed to ship, I would contact Ebay and tell them your situation. Good luck...

West Baden Springs Hotel and the French Lick Spa

French Lick, Indiana is the city. Try Google and you

can get a picture of the DOME. The West Baden Springs hotel was a great place for movie stars and gangsters until

the Great Depression. After the stock market crash, the

owner sold the hotel to the Jesuit priests who made it

a monastery for 20+ years. When times got tough

for the monks - they sold it - it was falling down and going

to ruins until the Indiana Renaissance Commission decided to save it...historical commission or something like that.

It has been reborn - now has a casino on a man-made lake between the French Lick Resort and Spa and the West Baden Springs Hotel. Ski Paoli is down the road. And to the person who responded there's nothing to do in Indiana. Get away from the computer loser and go see. You might be amazed!

Why is the willow ptarmigan (how is that pronounced) the state bird of alaska and the forget me not the flower

Thats a great question. Ptarmigan is pronounced tarmigan, the p is silent.

As to why the Ptarmigan is the state bird and the state flower is the forget-me-not, I have no idea, but I can tell you that the Ptarmigan was adopted as such in 1955 by the Territorial Government, and the Forget-Me-Not was adopted as the state flower in 1917.

Is it illegal to pick wild growing bluebonnets in texas?

I've always heard since I was little that it's illegal to pick bluebonnets in texas, since they're they state flower. Is this true, or just a rumor?

Is it illegal to pick wild growing bluebonnets in texas?
From the Houston Chronicle in 2003:

This is a widely known myth and it is probably the most-asked question this time of year. It is perfectly legal to pick wildflowers in Texas, including our state flower, the bluebonnet. The question is asked so often of the State Highway Patrol, which has a standardized statement that it faxes to people advising that it is perfectly legal to pick bluebonnets.

There are some ways, however, that you can get into trouble and even break the law while you're picking them. First of all, you cannot trespass onto people's property to get to the flowers. That means that you cannot crawl over fences or go through gates to get into the fields where the flowers are.

Secondly, you cannot block traffic with your vehicle when you stop to pick the flowers. And, in Texas, it is illegal to walk along the freeways or the shoulder of the freeways. It is also illegal to damage anyone's property, including the state's property, while you're picking the wildflowers. That includes making ruts in the grass or causing any type of damage to the landscape.

There are some areas where the state has actually planted bluebonnets and other wildflowers. Those are clearly marked. These are considered to be gardens, and gathering flowers in these areas is not allowed. If you are caught picking flowers in those areas, you will be asked to stop, but you will not be arrested or issued a ticket.

So, there are certainly ways to get into trouble while picking wildflowers and some folks have actually broken some laws while doing so. However, picking wildflowers — even bluebonnets — is not illegal and never has been. Just be careful how and where you do it.

OMG, I have Blackeyed Susans coming out of the wazoo. I love them, they are beautiful and the MD State flower but.....they are taking over my flower bed. I have a rose bush that is being totaly destroyed. I don't want to kill them but I have to do something. I can transplant them but I'm worried they will come back in the same spot. Can anyone help me?

How do i get rid of Blackeyed Susans?
You can pull them out of the soil, dig them out or use RoundUp. They will not return. Your problem is due to the fact that they spread via seed. Dead head (cut-off) the spent blooms and you will not have these problems in the future with your Blackeyed Susans.

.
Reply:You have to pull them out of ground, and make sure you get their roots. I,ve had a few reappear, but easily removed them. You can replant some in another spot, just make sure it,s not where other plants are,as you know they tend to take over a area.

My great-grandpa died, I live in another state....flowers?

I was going to send flowers to his wake/funeral but flowers die so that's depressing! Is there anything else I can send to my family besides flowers for the funeral? He has several children, and over 80 grandchildren (including great-great-great) so I know there will be a lot of flowers there, anyway.

He was a sugar cane farmer who died in bed on Sunday, of natural causes, at the age of 95.

Any suggestions appreciated!

My great-grandpa died, I live in another state....flowers?
You can call the local florist and ask about potted plants instead of cut flowers. A nice orchid is very tasteful.

If you want to send something to the family instead of something to display at the funeral, I strongly suggest a nice food basket. Many online companies like Harry %26amp; David offer baskets of fruit, and some are even particularly designed for "sympathy" occasions. After my grandmother's passing, someone sent my mother a lovely basket of various fruits and munchies that provided anti-oxidants and comfort during the grieving period (when many people forget to shop or take care of their own health).
Reply:I think a donation to charity is the best thing. That way your great-grandpas death is going to help some one else. He had a good and long life so celebrate his life by helping to make a difference to someone else. Maybe if your not sure of which charity to support you could adopt a child form a third world country in his name, thereby helping the next generation. I hope that was of some help. Sorry for your loss
Reply:there are sites you can go to that will send flowers to the funeral but the make sure that they are not even opened when they get there and they do not die... google it. and make sure it goes with a card!!
Reply:I would send a nice note to the children of your great grandfather. That would be your great aunts and uncles. No need to send flowers....there will be a ton of them. And no one knows what to do with the flowers after the funeral. Send a nice note to each explaining who you are and how nice that your great grandfather has such a nice long life and meant so much to so many people.
Reply:you can send a basket of fruit

or something from edible arragements.

love that place.

great idea!

sorry about him dying.
Reply:Flowers are a one day item and then are donated elsewhere or thrown away. I would suggest just sending a check for $25 to the family for their intentions marked on the check. That way if they want it for a mass or a charity in his name, they will do so and send you a thenk you card.

I keep mine on the balcony. It just finished flowering a few weeks ago and it's turning yellow and brown. the leaves are falling off. I live in the Philippines and I would be grateful for information on how to take care of it from this state. It IS normal, right?

My stargazer plant is yellowing and the leaves are falling. How do you take care of the plant from this state?
It's normal. After the flower blooms and the bloom dies, the rest of the plant goes back into "hibernation". The leaves will yellow and the stem will die too. At this point, it would be safe for you to clip the plant close to the soil. It is a bulb, so it will come back next year.
Reply:this company will answer all your questions about your stargazer plant , my guess would be , needs more water, food, but I would ask them %26gt;http://www.stargazerperennialscatalog.co...

When the USA becomes a true totalitarian police state will you shower a liberating army with flowers?

Or do you think its better to stop voting for neocons and avoid that whole situation?

When the USA becomes a true totalitarian police state will you shower a liberating army with flowers?
You shouldn't forget that Mussolini and Hitler and other totalitarian regimes had public support.

The problem isn't going to be solved if USA gets rid of the Neocons because expansionism and imperialism are stable in the short history of USA. That's the open wound that starts to affect the interior nowadays, again, like Vietnam's days, less obviously but more steadily
Reply:I don't think that an outside army would be necessary. I and many others would start an insurgency to free our country from their rule.
Reply:Our government took away more rights and freedoms under Democrat Congresses and presidents than under Bush and neocons, and it has been doing so for well over 100 years.

And most of those rights and freedoms were taken in order to "protect us from ourselves" or "for the children".

Which flowering plants and herbs are best to start growing in June, in Washington State?

the flowers and herbs would be outdoors on a deck where there is equal amounts of sun and shade throughout the day. I'm an amatuer gardener and I would love to have some kind of garden on my deck...Whether it be vegetables, fruit, herbs or flowers...I just don't know whats best to start in summertime. Thanks!

Which flowering plants and herbs are best to start growing in June, in Washington State?
'Equal amounts of sun and shade?" If you have midday or afternoon sun, pick sun-loving plants. Buy tomato starts, cucumbers, melons, peppers, lavender, rosemary. Plant new zealand spinach, sunflowers. Seattle Tilth has written THE best month-by-month garden guide for the region.

If you only have morning sun, you need shade plants. Impatiens, ferns, astilbe, etc.
Reply:Herbs are usually Mediterranean and LOVE lots of sun. They are great container subjects if you give them enough sun. Great ones are thyme, oregano, basil, tarragon, rosemary. Don't try to start these from seed as summer is brutal, so buy starter plants from your local garden center. Happy Gardening!!!!!
Reply:You didn't say east or west side. I'm west so my suggestions may not be useful. It has been so warm and dry this year it is good you will be in control of the water. I would set up a drip system for ease of watering if possible. If not be sure there is an easy route to a water supply. Test soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil three inches; if dry ie warm, water; if wet %26amp; cool, don't water." If it gets into the 90's set up a mister.

This late you will want to buy starts at your local nursery. With your description of half day sun put any herbs with the afternoon sun. Herbs are generally very vigorous growers so they need to be sheared, snipped, or nibbled down regularly. To maintain this a mid-season fertilization with a fish/kelp emulsion or other organic liquid fertilizer like Earth Juice will keep them healthy and growing.

Cooking with lavender is common in Europe and the Mediterranean. In France it is used in Herb Provence. It is a member of the mint family and is close to rosemary, sage, and thyme. It is best used with fennel, oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, and savory.

http://whatscookingamerica.net/lavender....

Rosemary %26amp; lavender are not going to winter over in pots on the deck as they are easily frost damaged being from the hot Mediterranean.

Tarragon, savory are easy in pots and they shear into nice mounds.

Sweet basil, oregano, marjoram, thyme and the flat leaf Italian parsley can perfectly grow together in a pot. Parsley and basil are annuals. Also watch the oregano and marjoram don't just overgrow the thyme since it is much slower. Oreganos, lemon balm, bee balm, borage and mints are herbs that are more vigorous in growth.

Chives, burnet, and rocket look and do well together.

Look for Salvia officinalis (Dwarf Sage)

Lavandula 'Blue Cushion', 'Thumbelina', (Dwarf English Lavender)

Rosmarinus officinalis 'Pinkie', 'Golden Rain' (Dwarf Rosemary)

Besides herbs consider Heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescens) for the fragrant, blue flowers. Grow it with Chinese foxglove (Rehmannia elata) as the vertical element, combined with some variegated coleus for fill.

Cascade some cottage pinks (Dianthus) over the side of a container filled with a fuschia and perilla. These will not like afternoon sun only morning sun. If you are around Seattle go to Wells Medina for container plants. Their coleus, geranium, container selection is good and often very unusual.

If you have enough afternoon sun, at least 6 hours, consider a little rose as the center of a pot. This would be good for miniatures. Your could open up the range by growing a miniature climbing rose like 'Sequoia Ruby' on the trellis or railing. The vertical element in a pot could be a mini tree rose like 'Halo Sweetie' surrounded by a cascading Million Bells Calibracoa. I grow my patio roses in half barrels on casters. I drilled a hole in the bottom to ensure drainage since herbs and roses both dislike wet roots.

Two years ago I got a dark red Ruby Meidiland landscape rose that works well as a mini-cascader. It produces lavish clusters of very ruffled, double blossoms.

For a fragrant mini rose try one of the Scentsation series. These are small shrub types but are narrow so would look good with alyssum %26amp; thyme cascading over the rim and the midground filled with basil 'Oriental Breeze'.
Reply:I would reccomend some roses for the sunny parts of the deck. and for the shady parts would reccomend impatients they both bloom all season long . I would buy these already started . good luck .

Would Fresh Cut Flowers survive in a box to another state? If so, for how long?

Thanks.

Would Fresh Cut Flowers survive in a box to another state? If so, for how long?
1-800-flowers does it all the time. They put a water tip on each stem and then ship the whole bouquet in styrofoam. I've gotten flowers that way and they lasted a week or two, same as florist plants do.
Reply:A fresh cut plant can last up to two weeks as long as it is kept between 34-40 degrees. It will need fresh water before it is sent and clip the bottom 1/8" off the stem. If it is not kept at 34-40 degrees, it wont last longer than 2 1/2 days.
Reply:Why not use Interflora or similiar in US?
Reply:My brother shipped Mom roses from California and we live in Ohio. The stems were packed in wet clay and wrapped with plastic. He did send them UPS second day delivery.. I don't think they would last long during the warmer weather.
Reply:Fresh cut flowers in that condition will last only a day or two at most.

Can anyone tell me what type of flower these are?

Okay there are two types of flowers. The first one is this one: http://www.painetworks.com/photos/gv/gv0...

The second one is this, I'm almost positive: http://inu2006.buzznet.com/user/photos/?...

It grows on big bush type plants. The flower come in pinks greens blues or purples. The flowers grow in bunches with lots of little flowers. The flowers grow in a globe shape. They are a lot of places in France and I have seen them in the states too.

Can anyone tell me what type of flower these are?
the first one looks like a fuchsia plant which is usually sold in nurseries as a annual hanging basket. The flowers look like there hanging upside down.

the second could be a Hydrangea, usually pink but acidic soil will turn them blue or by watering them with miracle grow miracid.or something to bring acid level up .Its a perennial here .Blooms in the summer.Hope this helps.
Reply:first on fuschia....second hydrangea
Reply:the first one is Fuchsia the second is Hydrangea
Reply:The first one is Double Fuchsia, it has bigger flowers than the single type.

The second one is Hydrangea, they come in different sizes from 2 ft to 5 ft.

In mental retardation, how is the emotional state related to the intellectual development?

I read the short story Flowers for Algernon and the main character is Mental retardation affects his emotional state and intellectual development. As he gets smarter, his emotional state changes to a more aggressive state. But what is the relationship between emotion and intelligence in general?

In mental retardation, how is the emotional state related to the intellectual development?
To me, there is little correlation in the normal range.

Of course, if one occupies a fringe position by being extremely intelligent or cognitively deficient, he may tend to manifest some dysfunctional emotional behavior.

Yucca itself its easy to find, they sell it frozen or even fress raw in the supermarkets but the flower is the problem????

I think they might sell them at home depot garden place or armstrong garden place.
Reply:The "yucca flower" is the state flower of New Mexico.

You can buy it here.

Also Both the latin market and the health food store near you will sell Yucca flour. If you have a Latin market near you, they'll have it there. If not, check the health food store. They'll be more expensive than the Latin market, but they may even order it if you request it/pester them enough.

What plants or flowers can I plant in August in Washington state?

I have a bed of good soil that is 2x20 ft long at the end of my driveway and I want to plant something in it! But i don't know too much about gardening. Please answer seriously! Thank you.

What plants or flowers can I plant in August in Washington state?
Eastern or western WA? It would make a difference!

I'd go with chrysanthemums and asters. Both are considered to be autumn bloomers.

Your best investment for gardening advice is buying a copy of the Sunset Western Garden Book, put out by Sunset magazine. It has everything you'd ever need to know about gardening west of the Rockies.

There is a pattern book at Michael's craft store that had bookmarks with the bird and flowers of each state. I think AC Moore has it also. Happy stitching!
Reply:I know that you are looking for websites with this information. But there are cross stitch books that can be purchased for approximately $20 that would include all 50 flowers as well as the color charts needed to complete each flower. You will spend more than that amount in time to locate the site or sites much less printing out all of these patterns. Good luck in your search.

What's the cheapest way to send flowers to someone in another state?

I know it's hard to do that if you are on a budget but maybe some of you know something.

What's the cheapest way to send flowers to someone in another state?
send them a ecard with flowers on it
Reply:Don't order from your local florist. I'm sure there is a florist near the destination. If you can find one that's within 5 miles and does a good job with arranging 'em(flowers), you're good to go. Doing it online would be better too. At least you get to see it first before you pay for it.
Reply:Enlist their friend, relative or housemate to do it. Of course, bribe them for their time with a box of chocolates or a fiver. I'm sure they would be very happy to help.
Reply:goodness. An animated e-card and a scratch-and-sniff sticker when they visit yah!
Reply:Locate a floral delivery service online in the person's country and make an order. Pay by credit card number. There's no cheapest way. Sending flowers is expensive.
Reply:go to www.images.yahoo.com %26gt; type in "Flowers." You should get some pictures of flowers, choose the one you like and send it over as an attachment. In the email, state "honey, this is for you... from my heart".

Real flowers will probably die by the time they reach the person you are trying to give them to... it's better to send a pic of fresh flowers :p
Reply:I recently found out all of this because of Valentines day! The best answer I can supply is to compare, compare, compare....

There is like 1-800 Flowers, Teleflorist... etc. I went online to find flowers and ended up with the one that had maybe not the best deal on the flowers but with the shipping! Also some of them may have specials, always something to ask about!?!?!
Reply:Telephone the nearest neighbour(with a landline) and ask them to 'pick and deliver'.
Reply:Cheapest?

Just throw the flowers into the next twister heading to that state...
Reply:tell someone in that state to give it to the person they could go to a field and pick some send that person 2 bucks in the mail for their effort
Reply:As expensive as it is to have flowers delivered, the cheapest may be if you buy them at Sam's and drive a 1000 miles to deliver them! But seriously, if you have an friends in the area where the recipient is, why not ask them? Send them $30-40 and tell them to get a $15 bouquet at Sam's and deliver %26amp; for them to keep the difference. It seems like last time we had some flowers sent, it was a pitiful bouqet for about $65 or $70.
Reply:i have found it cheaper to find phone a florist in the area the recipient lives in and order flowes from them. it is usually cheaper to pay the long distance phone call than to pay the florist at your end all the additional charges they levy for doing the same thing - phoning the florist at the other end.
Reply:i think there are some services maybe you can find in internet you pay with credit card and they will do for you, try to find some that is known other wise coudl be a scam, i hope that helps.

Oh you mention cheapest.. ididnt read that, cheap will be buy a flowers your self, and put in a nice box and send througth the post office, they will be ligth not heavy , so you wont pay much money.
Reply:send her rose seeds tell her to plant them and have her watch your love grow..........nah that's gay...

How does the pH of the soil affect the colour of the flower?

Please state how, give examples, and also state the hypothesis (the relationship between the two).

e.g. the ...... the pH of the soil, the ...... the colour of the flower.

How does the pH of the soil affect the colour of the flower?
As you know, some flowers come in different colours. In some, but not all, cases, this is because the petals contain chemicals which are natural indicators, and change colour according to the pH of the soil. Where it gets complicated is that there's no general rule that applies to the colour changes associated with all the different species of flowering plant. In the case of hydrangeas for instance, blue flowers grow in basic soil. Add something acidic like sulphur dust or superphosphate and they'll turn pink. Add wood ash or lime and they'll turn blue again. But in other flowers the results are quite different because the indicator chemicals are different. The same happens when you pickle vegetables. The acidic pickle changes the colours of different vegetables differently.

Can you state facts about the poppy (flower)?

-4 facts

-characteristics

-adaptation

you can answer one topic

but all would be better!!!

Can you state facts about the poppy (flower)?
It is the state flower of California.
Reply:It is the mother plant and the source of all opiates.

It's latin name is Papeversomniferum

(if anyone was wondering what my tag name meant now you know...)

It is an annual

The colors come in all varieties the most beautiful and recognizable being the papever orientalis which is the vibrant red orange color associated with poppies.

It was metaphorically used in the Wizard of OZ as the cause of the characters need to sleep... Sleep being the main effect of opiates. One canno't however extract opiates from any other part of the plant but the pod or unopened bud.

The seeds are used for cooking and seasoning and as an ingredient in baking.

If you eat enough of the seeds, it is true that you can show positive for opiates on a drug screening if it is sensitive enough and specifically looking for them in your blood stream.

It has a male and female part... Female is called the Carpel and the male is called the stamen.

It has corolla that surround the reproductive parts and sepal that indicate furtilization readiness and harvest when they fall off.

What else do you want to know?

The poppy has one large carpel and a stigma from a cross section of the ovary you can see the ovules that contain the opiates.

Check out the link below... It is rather interesting!

We have something in the UK that is known as Jack in the Pulpit also - I don't think it's the same one that you're asking about but I've attached a link to that as well (second link below)

They look like a little stick man figure enveloped by a beautiful green leaf. I always used to love to see them pop up in the spring. Don't pick them! I think they are endangered.

WEST VIRGINIA - STATE TRIVIA - SYMBOLS %26amp; FACTS

Animal Black Bear (Ursus Americanus) The Black Bear was selected as West Virginia's official State Animal by a poll of students, teachers and sportsmen conducted by the Division of Natural Resources in 1954-1955. It was officially adopted by the Legislature during the 1973 Regular Session with the approval of House Concurrent Resolution 6.

Bird

Cardinal (Cardinalis Cardinalis) On March 7, 1949, legislation was passed allowing for the adoption of an official bird and tree, to be decided by a vote. The cardinal was named the state's official state bird with the adoption of House Resolution 12 on March 7, 1949, which authorized pupils from public schools and civic organizations to name the bird.

Fish Brook Trout

Flower Rhododendron (Rhododendron Maximum) With the recommendation of the Governor and a vote by public school pupils, the Legislature adopted House Joint Resolution 19 on January 29, 1903, naming the Rhododendron the official state flower.

Fruit Golden Delicious Apple. Designated as the official state fruit by Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 7, adopted by the Legislature on February 20, 1995. Anderson Mullins discovered this apple variety in Clay County in 1905. The plain apple had been previously designated as the official state fruit by House Concurrent Resolution No. 56, adopted March 7, 1972.

Gem Mississippian Fossil Coral. The State Gem is technically not a gemstone, but rather the silicified Mississippian Fossil Coral Lithostrotionella, preserved as the siliceous mineral chalcedony. Designated by House Concurrent Resolution No. 39, March 10, 1990. It is found in Hillsdale Limestone in portions of Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties and is often cut and polished for jewelry and display.

Insect The Honeybee (Apis Mellifera) became West Virginia’s official state insect in 2002 by the Legislature’s Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 9. In addition to its flavorful honey, the honeybee pollinates many of the state’s most important crops including fruits, vegetables and grasses. Its activity produces more benefit to the state’s economy than any other insect. The honeybee has six legs, four wings and its coloring ranges from dark yellow to gold with three dark bands on its abdomen.

Soil Monongahela Silt Loam. Adopted by concurrent resolution in 1997, making West Virginia the 12th state to have an official state soil.

Tree

Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum). The adoption of House Concurrent Resolution 12 on March 7, 1949, authorized a vote by public school students and civic organizations to name the Sugar Maple as the official state tree

Motto Montani Semper Liberi - Mountaineers are Always Free

Songs West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home by Julian G. Hearne, Jr. Adopted 1947

The West Virginia Hills, words and music by Ellen King and H. E. Engle. Adopted 1961

This is My West Virginia, by Iris Bell. Adopted February 28, 1963

Day June 20 West Virginia was proclaimed a state in 1863. “West Virginia Day”, June 20, became a legal WV holiday by Chapter 59, Acts of the Legislature, Regular Session, 1927.

Colors Old Gold %26amp; Blue Old Gold and Blue were designated as official state colors by Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 20, adopted by the Legislature on March 8, 1963.

Seal

Joseph H. Diss Debar, an artist from Doddridge County, was chosen by a committee of the Legislature to prepare drawings for an official seal for the State of West Virginia. The artist submitted his drawings with an explanation of each detail and from these was adopted, by the Legislature, a seal which has remained without change, the Official Seal of West Virginia.

The seal contains the Latin motto, Montani Semper Liberi, which means “Mountaineers Are Always Free.” A large stone in the center of the seal stands for strength. On the stone is the date the State was admitted to the Union, June 20, 1863. The farmer with his ax represents agriculture, and the miner holding his pick represents industry. In front of the rock are two rifles, crossed and surmounted at the place of contact by the Phrygian cap, or cap of liberty, indicating that freedom and liberty were won and will be maintained by the force of arms. While the seal was designed and adopted with two sides, only the front side is in common use. The Constitution of West Virginia, Article 2, Section 7, provides that: “The present seal of the state, with its motto ‘Montani Semper Liberi,’ shall be the great seal of the State of West Virginia, and shall be kept by the secretary of state, to be used by him, officially as directed by law.”

The reverse side of laurel and oak leaves, log house, hills, factories and boats is the Governor’s Official Seal.

Flag

West Virginia’s original flag was created for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, held in St. Louis, Missouri. A rhododendron, West Virginia’s state flower, was depicted on the front side, the state coat of arms was on the back. This flag was officially adopted in 1905. But two years later the emblems were switched, the coat of arms was now appearing on the front. In 1929 a new design including both emblems on one side was adopted, since it is less costly to produce a one-sided flag. A white field (background) bordered with blue now bears the arms, the inscription “State of West Virginia,” and a wreath of rhododendron.

The coat of arms is similar to the state seal, which was adopted in 1863. Both contain the Latin motto, Montani Semper Liberi, which means “Mountaineers Are Always Free.” A large stone in the center of the seal stands for strength. On the stone is the date on which the State was admitted to the Union, June 20, 1863. A farmer with an axe represents agriculture, while a miner with a pick represents industry. In front of the rock are two crossed rifles supporting a Phrygian cap, or cap of liberty. This indicates that freedom and liberty were won and will be maintained by the force of arms.

What is the name for a flower grown in the southern states on a bush during the summertime that is big?
hibiscus
Reply:Its a Hydrangea. The flowers start out green then change to either blue or pink depending on pH of the soil. Blue comes from acid soil %26amp; pink from alkaline or neutral. You can make the flowers pink by adding lime to the soil, or blue by adding aluminum sulfate.
Reply:Of the answers-- I think Rose of Sharon or crepe myrtle is the answer-- no other information to help identify the plant-- however the Rose of Sharon is a "old timey" plant-- you'll find it in areas where houses have been cleared for whatever reason-- especially around homesteaders home places. The flower looks like a hollyhock-- just one bloom at a time. It along with iris were two of the plants the pioneer women brought to the new land (Oklahoma) that were tough enough to survive-- providing some beauty to these remarkable women.

The crepe myrtle is the "lilac of the south" -- if not trimmed back in the dormant season, this flowering shrub will grow as tall as the eave of your house, although there is a dwarf version now. Colors range from white thru bright pink and finally a true red. You can trim up the branches (take off small branches from the ground up to where you want the flowers to be-- ) and the bark will peel in places making it interesting year round. Or you can just cut the whole thing back when dormant and get loads of blooms the next summer. The blooms themselves are small and look kinda like crepe paper flowers you made in school.-- hence the name-- but the flowers are all together on the end of the branch-- looking somewhat like a lilac.

Both the rose of sharon and the crepe myrtle have small leaves whereas the hydrangea has much larger leaves. Hydrangea likes mostly shade and crepe myrtle and rose of sharon like full sun.

St. Helen's has made quite a comeback -- but in many cases, it is against the law to pick wildflowers in the parks. You can enjoy them, photograph them, but you can't pick them. Check with the Parks and Recreation Dept and the Park Rangers to make sure what regulations are in place.

Does picking flowers for state functions count as presidential experience?

Gosh, I hope she didn't pick flowers close to the house ... cuz Bill probably whizzed out the windows on those.

I would have to say no. Anything that would count as experience, as first lady she didn't have clearance to attend.

you should be able to find them in the meadows scattered in Western Washington.

Really, your just going to have to drive around, with special attention paid to areas that are up in elevation about 4000' level. South facing slopes are a better chance, but they bloom before the northern slopes, so if you don't have luck seek out areas/hillsides that are facing a different direction. Most likely you will have to get off the highway, but you will have some luck on the side-roads and by-roads. the non-paved roads may or may not work but your chances are less because they would be in areas that have thicker cover, and less foliage underneath.

Lastly, maybe you need to try something unique and different, your daughter may really love a thickly vegetated fern forest areas such as in the Olympic peninsula, which can make a small person feel like an ant. This could be fun for her too.
Reply:I know it's wierd, but check at your local starbucks. Check and see if they still have any wildflower gift card holders. buy a $5 gift card and get a packet of seeds your sweetie can plant and watch grow.

Just go and apply for a tax id number that simple. Come up with a name for your hobby company its that simple. You can even file taxes at the end of the year in conjunction with your normal taxes. A company can show a loss for the first 5 years so this can come in handy such as buying that new computer or what ever that you might use in your business, it can be used as a write off on your taxes so it is pretty much free. there are many ways to get tax cuts with having your own tax id number. :%26lt;)
Reply:I would contact a friend or associate with a buisness license and buy it through them. Offer an incentive.
Reply:Call the IRS and see what they say...cant hurt! I just got off the phone with them and got my tax ID number in a matter of 10 mins.

How long does it take for a sunflower to start budding for a flower and when should it happen?

we stated them in little flower pots may 24th and planted then in the ground june 17th. we water then every other day unless it rains.

How long does it take for a sunflower to start budding for a flower and when should it happen?
It depends on the variety of sunflower you planted and the amount of sunshine. The package should tell you how long it takes for the plant to flower/mature. Some bloom earlier than others.

Patience . . . it will bloom!
Reply:I Live in Australia and have grown Sunflowers each summer. The flower head or heads typcially form within the first few weeks of growth, and continue to enlarge up until the open up. You indicate they have been in the ground now for nearly 3 weeks so you should be able to see the heads by now right at the very top of the plant, or if they are a multiple flowering variety you should see them starting to develop inbetween the stem and the leaf of the plant
Reply:You did not say what part of the country you are in. If you are in the northern states, say within 300 miles or so from the Canandian border, they should be budding soon, within the next few weeks. I put some out from seed direct and they are blooming right now but they are also in good soil. I take it your soil is good so if you are about the same distance from Canada, yours should be budding soon. They will normally get about 4 feet high before starting to bud but it depends a lot on the weather and soil conditions too. Also depends on the type of sunflower you planted. Good luck. Just be patient and you should have some blooming soon.
Reply:I planted mine in very sunny areas in my yard.I dont think it takes very long at all and I just let the rain water mine and the grew about 7 feet tall.

Where can I get Plumeria (the tropical flower) on the internet or in the Chicago, IL area?

I want to get plumeria for a certain special girl for Valentine's Day because it is her favorite flower. She lives out of state, but I can't seem to find any way to buy them on the internet and have them delivered in anywhere but Hawaii. I could buy them in the Chicago area too instead, when she comes to visit. Any ideas?

Where can I get Plumeria (the tropical flower) on the internet or in the Chicago, IL area?
MOST FTD FLORESTS CAN OBTAIN ANY FLOWER AVAILABLE. MOST PLUMERIA DOES COME FROM HAWAII. WHILE THERE, I SHIPPED A "LEI" TO MY MOM FOR HER BIRTHDAY, AND WHEN IT ARRIVED IN TEXAS, SHE OPENED THE PACKAGE AND WAS DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE THE LEI APPEARED DRIED OUT, AND WAS JUST "BEADS" ON A STRING. AFTER READING THE INSTRUCTIONS, TELLING HER TO PLACE IT IN A LARGE BOWL WITH A CUP OF WATER COVERING THE LEI, AND TO PUT IT IN THE ICE BOX OVER NIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING, IT HAD HYDRATED, AND IT FILLED THE BOWL WITH IT'S FULLY EXPANDED LEAVES/FLOWERS. THE AROMA FILLED THE ROOM WHEN MY MOM OPENED THE ICE BOX. SHE STILL TALKS ABOUT HOW SUPPRISED SHE WAS WHEN SHE OPENED THE DOOR TO THE ICE BOX. IT WAS WORTH THE PRICE. ANYWAY, CHECK WITH ONE OF YOUR LARGER FLORIST SHOPS, THEY CAN GET IT FOR YOU

Buttercups flower, suggest how the way that this flower may be pollinated. and clearly state your reasoning.?

any idea what this means?

Buttercups flower, suggest how the way that this flower may be pollinated. and clearly state your reasoning.?
Buttercups have bright yellow petals. This suggests that the flowers are insect pollinated because the brightness of the petals attracts the insects.

Wind-pollinated plants have very small or nonexistent petals.
Reply:Adding to the insect hypothosys, the insect that does pollinate this flower is probably a larger insect that lands on the flower to feed due to the large open nature of the flower. There is enough room and support for an insect such as a bee or butterfly to land comfortably and find the nectar easily.

Unlike a red tubular flower that would best be adapted to hummingbirds or hovering moths.

What should i call my new state?

How do I start planting flowers in Washington state?

I want to plant perenials this year but dont know where to start. I'm new at growing flowers outside and want easy to maintain, beautiful, hearty flowers that can withstand the north-west region( pictures and websites would be a plus).

How do I start planting flowers in Washington state?
Washington has the most beautful gardens in the country IMO because you never get too cold, and there is lots and lots of rain. There are a lot of rhododendrons and I found that kind of boring. When I moved back to Maine I decided I would never plant one because I was so sick of them, but 20 years later I am starting to change my mind. Anyway, you can grow a HUGE variety of gorgeous things from roses to hostas and lots more. You can go woodland or formal. The sky's the limit!

One thing I noticed in Washington is that many people don't bother with turf grass. It doesn't like the dampness and it harbors icky slugs. Better to just let the moss come in. Moss is soft, inviting and never needs mowing.
Reply:This is one of my favorite things to do! Since you live in an area that gets a lot of rain(I'm assuming)you will be able to grow Rhodedendrons which are fairly low maintenance and beautiful at the same time. If you go to your local nursery and speak to someone they will be able to give you some ideas on what would suit your needs. Be sure to have info ready as to whether its shady, sunny, sheltered, etc. Also, don't be afraid to speak to more than one person. Sometimes they will hire someone off the street to care for the plants, but if it is a reputable nursery, you shouldn't have too much trouble with this.

What is the legal maximum age for a flower girl in a wedding in the United States?

A friend's six year old daughter will be serving as a flower girl at her sister's wedding tomorrow. Is this legal? Someone said that she was too old and I am afraid that the wedding will be raided by the State Police. That's the last thing we need!!!

If raided, will the six year old be breaking the law or the couple getting married? Or does the liability fall on the wedding planner? Or perhaps the girl's parents? Please help!!

What is the legal maximum age for a flower girl in a wedding in the United States?
There is no legal age limit. She could be 106 years old and still be perfectly legal as a flower girl.
Reply:there isnt a legal age.

?
Reply:you are joking right?

I think maybe aliens will come down from mars and kidnap the girl and take her away where she will never see a flower again!!!
Reply:is this answer for real i think state police have more to worry about than busting your wedding. My flower girls was like 10 so OMG the police might come after me?????? give me a break whoever told you that is full of it and so are you for believing it
Reply:are you mentally ill or something?
Reply:There is no age limit...And i think the police have better things to do than visit the sisters wedding...
Reply:There is a law for this? Since when?

There is no maximum (or minumum) age restrictions or laws or anything like that.
Reply:Are you like for real?

People do not get arrested for being a certain age and a flower girl.

6 yrs old is just about perfect age.

This really has to be a joke, right, I can not believe that anyone would really think like you do and not be a joke.

Or, are you blonde????
Reply:hahahahhahahahahaha

You should be good....if the state police try to raid the party, just give him a piece of cake and a glass of champagne....bribing never hurts...
Reply:she's not to old. she could be 1 year old and still be a flower girl. please.. there is age limit or maximum for a flower girl. your friend is messing with your head!
Reply:There isn't one.

I've never heard of a wedding being raided... unless you are some sorta drug cartel....

You've officially gotten a star for the most interesting question.
Reply:She's SIX?!??!?! Might as well just wave a banner saying "ILLEGAL **** COMMENCING!!!".

If you have enough alcohol, you MAY have enough time to get her to Mexico and teach her to mule drugs. Obviously, the police only rarely shoot at those people

If you have no alcohol, she's gone for. They will either snipe her where she stands, or lynch her at a later date, depending on how good the food is at your wedding. Police (even State patrol) are easily tempted/sidetracked by food, especially desserts of the pastry persuasion. Keep these on hand.

That won't have her from the lynching, mind you, but it MAY help you to avoid the bloodspatter that NEVER comes out and will make returning her dress impossible.

Best of luck to you - OH! And ALWAYS blame the parents.
Reply:They'll burst in through the windows of the chapel and drag the 6 year old out in handcuffs. It's a horrible scene. She'll likely get tossed into juvie for it too.
Reply:Sound like you are the one worried about getting arrested at the wedding........paranoid???
Reply:Yeah it's fine. That really is a law?
Reply:This is good.
Reply:i sure hope you're not serious. there is no such thing as a legal age for a flower girl in the states. she can be 2 or 200.
Reply:I'm pretty sure they'll call in SWAT for something like this, and when they catch her, I'm sure she'll spend the rest of her childhood in jail. They'll probably haul you in for being an accessory, too.
Reply:hahahahaha youll be fine
Reply:Are you kidding? Of course there isn't an age limit for a flower girl in a wedding, and the police have far too much crap on their hands then breaking up a wedding with a 6 year old flower girl.
