I have a tree in my yard that has beautiful pink flowers on it with deep redish brown leaves, what is it?

When we moved in last summer the tree had green oval leaves. The bark is a grayish brown. Now the tree is blooming all over with vibrant pink flowers and deep redish leaves. I just want to know what it is because I know I'm allergic to cherry blossom trees and this one looks similar but like I stated earlier has vibrant pink flowers. Can anyone tell me what it is. Oh, I live in the state of Maine, if that helps any.

sounds like a magnolia - see someone elses problem and their description here on answers at the top link below.

could also be a flowering cherry, the Ojochin. see a photo by clicking on the second link and more descriptions of cherry trees at the third link.

good luck!
Reply:Sounds like a flowering Crab Apple. They come in a few different shades of pink including a light pink and a deep pink as you describe. Mine looks just as you described with the darker leaves. They are coming into bloom here in NH as well. Warning:Tent Caterpillars will move onto it and eat the leaves this spring/summer. You might want to spray some type of pesticide on it.

Edit: Magnolia trees leaves come out after it flowers and are large flowers that are light pink and white. I still say it is a Crab Apple.
Reply:Sounds like crab apple to me! makes great Jelly/Jam
